As a pilot for Folsom’s in 1983-‘84, I flew trips into Spencer Lake, and Hardscrabble. A truly beautiful spot.

My first trip was memorable as the ceiling was low, and the other two pilots skedaddled leaving me, the new guy, to find my way back through the hills to Greenville alone. it worked out fine, although I did feel it prudent to ask Jake for his suggestions.

Jake and Beth were two of my favorite people. I admired both of them for their vision, hard work, and broad range skills... skills possessed by few individuals and in a unique combination.

Knowing many of the main characters, I have read all four Jake’s books - enjoying each of them thoroughly.

Fond memories of working with Dick, and Connie, came to mind. Both, as Jake might agree, could tell a story.

With all the logging roads, that kind of flying disappeared in Maine. Sad, as it altered aviation within the State in a few short years, and the experiences of those who loved the outdoors were forever altered.

Highly recommend all four.

Thank you Jake and Beth, for the memories.

Hi Jake,

For Christmas, my wife gave me two of your books, one on Gary Dumond and
one on Hardscrabble.

To escape 2020 we went out after the holiday to Baxter State park to
Daicey Pond for a few days. For nights by the fire after a day of
hiking, I had the perfect companion and finished both books.

So thanks- I really enjoyed the stories of life in the north Maine woods.

Morrel’s book reads like you are sitting around a campfire or possibly a wood burning stove in this case and listening to the tales of someone who’s done the things you only dream of.

I don’t know if I want to hug you or strangle you for writing the novel, as I finally put it down around 1:00 AM and went to bed. I have always been an avid reader, but I have never had the chance to read something that continually speaks of something I love and enjoy on a regular basis.

Jake, I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your book. I gave up flying many years ago, but still feel the stick in my left hand.

We love your book Hardscrabble Lodge: True Maine Bush Flying Stories. Our youngest reading member, George, 2 1/2 years old, thought it was a good story, too!
